The Cat in the Hat Inspired Birthday

My son's first birthday is my favorite party by far. Here are some of the details:

I must start by giving credit where credit is due, I got my inspiration from Amy at StemParties

Cat in the Hat Birthday(s):
This party was planned on a budget and on a very tight schedule so not everything went according to plan but I am still thrilled with the results. It was for my boy’s 1st birthday and his twin cousins’ 2nd birthday, I thought the theme went perfectly!

Cake table:
·         Cakes were made by Cristy Cakes, you can find her over at www.sweettreatsbycristy.co m; I found the picture at flickr.com and she made it even better
·         I decorated the cupcake stands with ribbon and what I call blue “fluffies”
·         I made the cupcake toppers which I had to cut with scissors because I couldn’t find those cute hole punchers
·         The cupcakes were made at Publix, like I said on a hurry and on a budget, they were still very good
·         I had goldfish crackers to go with the theme
·         I also had strawberries which were supposed to be dipped in blue chocolate but I burned the chocolate =(
·         The banner I made, I think it came out great, it was super cute and unique, I haven’t seen any like it,  I really loved it
·         I draped the walls with red and white fabric

Snacks Table:
·         The containers in this table were aqua and red to go with the theme, but I had to go with my family’s favorite snacks and not get too creative, they don’t appreciate it when I get creative with food

·         Same goes with the regular food, it was typical Cuban food, a family friend even made us “yellow rice” and spelled Happy Birthday Jonathan (in Spanish) with red pepper on it and had fish on the corners, I’m not sure you can see it from the picture but it’s there

Sign-in/Kid’s favor’s Table:
·         The favors were in red bags with aqua ribbons tied, skinny ribbon for the boys and thick ribbon for the girls, they included silly bands, noise makers, cat in the hat pencils and other random trinkets along with candy. I didn’t get a picture of the inside.
·         The favors I put inside a striped bowl
·         I made cute books with the boys’ pictures for guests to leave them their wishes and tied the books together with red and aqua ribbons, one book was for my boy and another for the twins.
·         I couldn’t find cute or red hats on the little time I had so I bought some and my husband painted them red, and left one blue to stand out
·         I made signs with Cat in the Hat characters that read: Come in and if you please… sign here…or here… and take one of these

Guest Tables:
·         The centerpieces were made by me; the hats I made from my son’s left over snack containers and felt
·         The fishbowl were super cute and the guests took them home, I glued fluffies and added aqua stones that floated when the fish swam, I also loved the contrast of the aqua and the orange
·         The table settings were super simple; I couldn’t find red scrapbook paper I wanted for placemats so I used the polka-dot stationary and wrote Thank You for Coming on each and placed them under the utensils
·         For the utensils I used aqua ribbon and glued little hats that I hand cut on them for napkin rings
·         For favors I used my son’s baby food jars, glued fluffies on the caps and filled them with red sour candy which was the biggest hit of the party
·         On each chair I glued Dr. Seuss quotes which are the only thing not totally true to the Cat in the Hat but they were too good to pass up

Seating Area:
·         I covered a sofa set with white fabric and put a blue cushion that resembled the “Thing’s” hair
·         On the center table I put a frame that I painted red and a Goldfish that my husband painted orange; I also put a bubble machine that the little ones loved
·         On the side table I put the book the Cat in the Hat

Clothing:
·         I made felt top hats for the birthday boys from left over felt from the centerpieces
·         For my son I had a shirt made by SewMuch2Sew over at www.etsy.com
·         I also found a onesie which I changed him into
·         For my husband I found a shirt with the Cat in the Hat but no luck for me
·         I told the twins’ mom to find Thing 1 and Thing 2 shirts but she didn’t =(

Misc:
·         We had a jumphouse which the kiddies loved
·         We had a magician who handed out gifts to the kids that participated on Cat in the Hat bags
·         The party was featured at Catch my Party: Party of the Day

I hope that is all of the details and that you enjoy our party, I sure did!

  1. I like this very much Amy! I always like red working with this greyish blue {does it has a name that I didn't know of?} can I feature this on my blog?

  2. I call it aqua but I'm not sure that that's the right shade (so many names to choose from!)

I'd be delighted if you featured it!

  3. Where did you find the blue fluffies?

  4. They are actually skinny boas that I cut up. I found them at a warehouse by my house for $1 but I have seen them at Michael's and JoAnn's for around $10 each.
